You probably never noticed the best crew. The drinks arrived — you can't even remember ordering them. The sails were trimmed, but you were on deck and saw no one. When you looked at the tender, it had already been lowered into the water.
This art of becoming invisible is far harder to learn than technical competence.
Character Before Certificate
Crew selection does not begin with a certificate check. Applicants' references are contacted. The references are asked a single question:
Did you feel looked after, or watched over?
Two words, two different worlds. Being watched over is a power relationship — one observes, the other is observed. Being looked after is care and attention — one cares, the other feels it.
Pre-Season Preparation
At the start of every season, all crew come together. Not technical matters — guest experience is what is discussed. What went well last season, what could have been better? This conversation forms the foundation of the training programme.
Detail matters. Coffee temperature. How a towel is folded. The shaded side of the deck being ready at lunchtime. None of this is by chance.
